Why I hate being called a "draftsperson."

Ok, let's get down to it, shall we?

I recognize that my job is to draft concepts to communicate overall ideas and intent, which falls neatly into the drafting definition.

And Yes, I recognize that drafting is an art form that has almost become extinct.

But here is why I still hate the term "draftsperson."

It only captures a small portion of what an Architectural technologist has in skillsets and talents. It minimizes our skillset’s impact on this industry and puts us squarely in a box that people know how to categorize.

If you haven't picked it up yet, I don't enjoy limitations being placed on me.

So what, prey tell, does an Architectural Technologists actually do?

Architectural Technologists are building design professionals trained in architectural design, building science and technology.

We think about the form, function, context and shape of the design we create. We pay attention to bylaws, codes, and technical aspects while weighing out multiple options simultaneously.

We are typically the "behind the scenes, get r done" people supporting Architects, Engineers and Professional Builders. In cases like mine, I work as an independent contractor supporting all three of these categories, plus folks looking to nail down concepts before hiring a contractor.

Here are a few reasons you want an Architectural Technologist like me involved in your project.

  • The base of my education is in structure and building science. I see homes on a holistic level, integrating all the working parts(often unseen) so that you can build the best home possible.

  • I am a dedicated professional who strives to become an expert in interpreting the changing landscape of local building bylaws and codes.

  • I maintain professional affiliations to stay informed and to influence the betterment of the home building industry. I have just surpassed my 20th year as a Technology Professionals of Saskatchewan member.

  • With practice (and constant fine-tuning), I have become a skilled communicator. I set expectations for working together and give accurate timelines to keep you on track. Clear is kind; unclear is unkind.

  • My spare time is consumed with increasing my design knowledge and business processes. I utilize BIM(Building information modelling) tools to produce an accurate set of construction documents, so you have fewer interferences to navigate on site.

  • Most of all, I bring my energy, enthusiasm and collaborative spirit to every project. I'm more passionate about creating custom home designs for clients' lifestyles than I was when I started.

You don’t have to walk this path alone, I’m here to guide you along the way. If you’d like to start a conversation about your project head to the link below and book your Lifestyle Home Design consult for the fall.

Until next time,

KM
