networking built for women

Do you cringe when you hear the term “networking event”? Maybe some low levels of anxiety kick into gear?

Yeah, me too,

I dread going to certain networking events.

You know the ones. Everyone hands out business cards, and there isn't a real conversation to be had. If you know me, surface-level conversations are not my jam.

I've often forced myself to go to these events because it was what I should do to grow my business. I've never been able to nail the perfect elevator pitch, and I'm constantly trying to engage with people to say I did vs connection with those I wanted to for the long term.

It is no surprise that women and men network in different ways.

One of the key differences I've experienced is that men have a more direct approach when networking. They are there for a specific purpose, which sometimes can feel a bit sales-y to women. Often relationships are already in place, so the feeling of being an outsider to the "old boys club" can kick into gear for women.

So why are we, women, forcing ourselves to network this way? What if we instead embraced how we do business and connected in a way that supported our natural inclinations?

Here are ways I have witnessed women network :

  • by building long-term relationships

  • by listening to others' experience

  • by sharing our knowledge and wisdom freely

  • by connecting on an emotional and intellectual level

When I realized that this is how I enjoy networking, with little stress and deeper connection, I started to look for events that fit this style instead of forcing myself into one that felt unnatural.

So, how can this help your career?

When you understand that you are building your social capital (who you know and who knows you), you can realize some massive career benefits.

Those include:

  • potential collaborations or job advancement

  • strong relationships that create strong referrals

  • lower stress level knowing you have peers to ask for advice

Email me if you haven't experienced networking built for women, and I'll add you to my next Designed for More invite list. I held the first event this week, and it's safe to say it was some magic ✨ for those who said "YES" to the invitation.

I want to see MORE women connect in authentic, powerful and supportive ways. You SO deserve to be heard and seen.

Until next time,

KM
